Fall is the time of returning. Returning to school, to work, to familiar patterns, cafes, bars and restaurants. New Yorkers trundle back over the George Washington bridge, sporting crisp summer tans and a renewed hunger for the potential of the months to come. Fashion Week capitalizes spectacularly on New Yorkers’ rejuvenation. It announces a new season of clothes – and to many, therefore a new season of possibility and promise. The fashions in this gallery perfectly capture that sense of transition from summer to fall. The color palette is distinctly mellower than the jolly primaries of summer – citing the turn of the season – but the silhouettes of the pieces are hardly office building friendly. The leg is flaunted with abandon, for example, emphasized always by heels. Stomachs peek out above miniature skirts and this season’s formal short is worn by several. So while maybe the rest of the world is buckling down and putting on their business bonnets for the arrival fall – New York is taking getting serious very seriously – and getting serious in style.
